Laptops As Desktops ?

AS PRICES OF laptops plummet, one
question that is being increasingly asked
is whether it is time to jettison the desktop?
The answer depends on what you
expect from a computer. A casual or
office user who spends much of his or
her time working on word processing,
browsing the Internet, answering email
and preparing presentations, will fi nd a
laptop perfectly adequate.
Power users and professionals looking
to do photo and video editing, software
development, or avid game players
may not be totally happy with
replacing a desktop with a laptop.
While top-end laptops are competitive
on performance with many desktops,
the price-performance ratio is still
biased in favor of desktop computers
by wide margin. Another factor to consider
is the upgradeability in notebook
computers. When compared to desktops
which are fairly easy to upgrade—
just pop off the cover and plug in a new
module or card—laptops should not be
messed around without proper tools
and expertise. You’ll fi nd that laptop
upgrades are often expensive—components
tend to cost almost twice as
much as equivalent to desktop parts,
and are not widely available.
