Sony rolls out first Xperia Z update with fix for ‘sudden-death’ issue

The Sony Xperia Z has been one of the most popular phones this year. Its water and dustproof body and the full HD display have propelled it up in the popularity charts. But soon users started reporting a weird bug in the phone, which would turn off the phone and only a hard reset (power + volume up) would get it started again. Even that solution was not a universal fix, as several users reported that the phone wouldn’t start up even through the hard reset option.

At the time, it was thought that the bug is related to the battery management software, but several users were reporting handsets dying on them with close to a full charge. Sony had promised an update to fix the issue, and the company has now started rolling out an update for the Xperia Z to fix the issue.

The build number is 10.1.A.1.434, but the Android version stays 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and the Kernel seems to be the same 3.4.0. version as well.

Even though there is no official changelog for this unexpected update, rumours have it the new release addresses the sudden-death issue plaguing the flagship. There were also other bugs such as the non-functional LED notification light when the phone is in Stamina mode. Users are reporting on the XDA Developers thread that there are some performance improvements and minor bug fixes as well in the package

Sony is releasing the update in stages both via the PC Companion app and over-the-air. You should check both for the update and if it isn't available for you already, it should pop up in a few days. For the impatient amongst you, there is a download link on the above XDA thread, which should help seasoned ROM flashers to get the update faster.

The Xperia Z is available in India for a price of Rs 38,990. At that price, it’s a great choice as it comes with a powerful Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU. It also has 2GB of RAM and Adreno 320 GPU.

Here’s a look at the key specs of the Xperia Z:

5-inch TFT LCD with a 1920 x 1080p resolution, 441 PPI LTE, Cat3, up to 100 Mbps DL, HSPA+, GPRS/EDGE Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspotGPS with A-GPS support Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP GPS with A-GPS support and GLONASS NFC 13 megapixel camera with HDR video recording, image stabilisation, Sony 3D Sweep Panorama; 2-megapixel front-facing camera with 1080p video recording 16GB internal storage with microSD card slot
