Sony 'plans two new ebook readers'

Sony is planning two new touchscreen ebook readers, according to online rumours.

The Sony Insider blog said that “trusted sources” say two new Sony Readers will be launched soon. According to the blog, one model will have a six-inch screen and wifi connectivity, while the other will have a five-inch screen and no wifi. Both models are said to have screens with improved contrast and faster page turns.

Sony has typically updated its Reader range at around this time of year. The original Sony Reader was launched in September 2006 in the US, with the UK version following in September 2008. The current Sony Reader range - the Pocket, Touch and Daily editions - were all announced in August last year.

However, a Sony spokesman told the Telegraph that they “cannot comment on rumour or speculation”.

The ebooks market has become more competitive in recent months with Amazon launching a UK version of its Kindle store and cutting the price of its latest Kindle reader. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPad has proved to be popular with readers - a survey last week found that British iPad owners are now more likely to read on there iPad than in print or on another device.
