Apple has refreshed its notebook line-up with a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display priced at $1,699. The device runs on OSX Mountain Lion and it is powered by a 2.5GHz Intel dual-core i5 and i7 'Ivy Bridge' processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB flash memory.
Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, introduced the new laptop that weighs only 3.5 pounds, making it the lightest Apple notebook ever. The company has shaved off 20% waistline, making the 13-inch MacBook Pro 0.75-inch thick.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses IPS technology for a 178-degree wide viewing angle and features a 720p FaceTime camera, can play 1080p video at 2,560x1,600 resolution, has 29% better contrast ratio and 75% lower glare over its previous iteration. The new Macbook Pro also has improved stereo speakers, dual mics with better voice recognition, MagSafe 2, two Thunderbolts docks, SD card reader, HDMI output and two USB 3.0 slots and the company promises a 7 hours of battery life with 30-days of standby time.
With the all-new Power Nap feature intoduced in OS X Mountain Lion, the device stays up-to-date even if it is on sleep mode. Power Nap automatically refreshes mail, contacts, calendar, reminders, and Photo Stream, and when the notebook is plugged in, downloads software updates and backs up your Mac using Time Machine.
Pricing & availability
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is available for Rs 1,14,900 inclusive of VAT and with 256GB of flash storage starting at Rs1, 34,900 inclusive of VAT. The device will be available through Apple Authorized Resellers.
iMac
Apple also revisited the seventh generation of iMac all-in-one desktop computers and reduced the thickness of the 21 and 27-inch models by 80% vis-a-vis existing models. The new iMacs have aluminium and glass enclosure
Apple has removed the optical drive so that the monitor now measures 5mm at the thinnest point. For internal storage, Apple has used a flash drive of 128GB capacity and FusionDrive - a HDD alternate with capacity varying between 1 to 3TB. Users can also opt for optical drives for the two iMac desktop computers.
The two desktop computers are powered by i5 or i7 processors, Nvidia Kepler graphics, and 32GB of RAM. These two AIOs also have 720p FaceTime HD camera, dual mics and dual speakers, four USB 3.0 ports and three Thunderbolt ports. The prices of the 21- and 27-inch iMacs are $1,299 and 1,799, respectively. The smaller AIO will be shipped in November, while its bigger sibling will hit the shelves in December.
Mac mini
Apple also updated the Mac mini with third generation dual-core Intel Core i5 and quad-core Intel Core i7 processors that are up to twice as fast and have up to 65% faster integrated graphics. Mac mini comes with 4GB of 1600MHz memory with support for up to 16GB. The new Mac mini now includes four USB 3.0 ports in addition to its Thunderbolt, HDMI, SDXC, Gigabit Ethernet and FireWire 800 ports.
