1. The Huffington Post
The Huffington Post is the number one most popular blog on the web, specializing in reporting breaking news from practically every major topic you could think of, including word news, entertainment, politics, business, style and several others. Founded by Arianna Huffington, Kenneth Lerer and Jonah Peretti in 2005, the blog was acquired by AOL in February 2011 for US $315 million and employs over 9,000 bloggers who contribute newsworthy written content on a wide range of topics.
2. TechCrunch
TechCrunch is a blog that was founded by Michael Arrington in 2005, which focuses on blogging about breaking news in technology, computers, Internet culture, social media, products, websites and startup companies. The blog has over 4.5 million RSS subscribers and inspired the launch of the TechCrunch Network, which includes a number of related websites like CrunchNotes, MobileCrunch and CrunchGear. TechCrunch was acquired by AOL in September 2010 for US $25 million.
3. Mashable!
Founded in 2005 by Pete Cashmore, Mashable delivers newsworthy content about social media, web development, Internet culture, gadgets, mobile devices and online entertainment. While Mashable only has about 50 employees, the blog packs a powerful punch in “all that’s new on the web,” and a reputation as the top source for social media news and the third most popular blog as ranked on Technorati.
4. Engadget
For those who like to stay on top of all things related to gadgets and consumer electronics, the Engadget blog is a valuable source for getting the latest news and information on everything from smartphones to tablet computers to cameras. Engadget was co-founded in 2004 by former Gizmodo editor Peter Rojas and purchased by AOL in 2005. Engadet also operates ten other blogs with four of them in English and six others in different languages.
5. ThinkProgress
Interested in politics? If you are, then the ThinkProgress blog is definitely for you. ThinkProgress is associated with the Center for American Progress Action Fund, which is a non-profit organization that seeks to provide information for the advancement of progressive ideas and policies. Some of the main sections on the blog include economy, green, LGBT, health, justice and security. ThinkProgress is frequently ranked amongst the top five most popular blogs on Technorati.
6. Gizmodo
Part of the Gawker Media network, Gizmodo is a popular technology blog that mainly focuses on delivering information and news about consumer electronics. Gizmodo was launched in 2002 by Peter Rojas before he was sought out by Weblogs, Inc. to launch the Engadget blog. Although the Gizmodo blog frequently ranks within the top 10 most popular blog spots, the major redesign that went live in February 2011 sparked a sharp decline in readership.
7. Gawker
The Gawker blog is best known for being the top source for daily Manhattan and New York City based media news, including all things related to gossip, celebrities and entertainment. Launched in January 2003 by Nick Denton, Gawker serves as the man blog for Gawker Media, posting up to 70 or more new blog posts on a daily basis. Some of the other blogs that are part of the Gawker Media network include Lifehacker, DeadSpin, Kotaku, Jezebel, io9.com, Jalopnik and Gizmodo.
8. The Daily Beast
The Daily Beast is a blog that was created by former editor of Vanity Fair and the New Yorker, Tina Brown. Launched in October 2008, The Daily Beast reports on news and opinion pieces on a wide range of topics including politics, entertainment, books, fashion, innovation, business U.S. news, world, causes, art and education. In November 2010, The Daily Beast and Newsweek merged together to create The Newsweek Daily Beast Company.
9. The Next Web
The Next Web is a blog that employs about 24 editors and writers who write about technology, business and culture. The blog was launched as a result of organizing a technology conference called The Next Web Conference, which was initially held in 2006. After the two more annual conferences, the Next Web blog was launched in 2008, which has grown to take its place amongst the most popular blogs on the web today.
10. Business Insider
Focusing on financial, media, technology and other business industries, the Business Insider is a young blog that was launched in February 2009 and is owned by Silicon Alley Insider, Inc. Top business news stories are aggregated and reported from across the web, offering some of the most up to date information in current business events and related topics.
