WordPress is one of the most popular and most used CMS on web. The reason for this is very simple, “WordPress is the best open source CMS available” (at least according to me). I will be discussing advantages of using self-hosted WordPress over Blogger in this post.

Why WordPress is Better than Blogger?
Better Search Engine Optimization
WordPress allows you to optimize your blog by making changes to elements like permalinks, editing source code easily, adding SEO plugins etc. WordPress structure is better for SEO as it has been discussed already on the internet.
Custom Permalink Structure
One of the reasons I like WordPress over blogger is custom permalink structure. Permalink structure has a huge impact on your blog’s SEO. WordPress allows to you to choose from different permalink structures.
WordPress Plugins
WordPress plugins are one of the most important elements that help make WordPress optimized for search engines. WordPress plugins reduces your time as well as money. There are useful plugins like SEO by Yoast, W3c Total Cache, Google sitemaps etc.
WordPress is Highly Customizable
Custom Themes and Plugins
Yes, this is the fact, WordPress has better themes, plugins, awesome frameworks like Genesis and Thesis. As compared to Blogger, WordPress has an upper hand in customization. Where as Blogger uses XML templates. which are tricky to understand (at least for me), WordPress themes can be customized by having little knowledge of CSS. Even if you have no technical knowledge, you can always choose to use plugins instead.
Easy to Backup
Most of the web hosting providers offer full automatic backups and also WordPress generates an XML file as the backup and you can re-upload the XML file later to restore your blog, easy, huh? Blogger also provides XML backups, but full server backups are always better as they retain your themes, plugins and attachments too.
Better WYSIWYG editor
I also like WordPress WYSIWYG Editor, as it is clean and looks modern. WordPress WYSIWYG is compact, has more functions and is easier for newbies and learners. One more important thing is, plugins get integrated with WYSIWYG, so its easy to use them while writing a blog post.
E-commerce Plugins
I wanted to discuss this point in more detail, but I don’t want this post to get too long and boring. So, WordPress has themes that let you use WordPress as an e-commerce site. It is in fact one of the best platform for newbie e-commerce website owners. Using just simple plugins and themes, you can make yourself a nice, functioning e-commerce website.
Post Categories and Pages
What I like the most about WordPress is categories, they just simplify everything. Its easier to separate the content into different categories for better user experience. WordPress gets one more plus point by having better pages, you can choose different template for your pages. You can hide sidebar from your pages and also you can use custom permalinks for your pages.
The top blogs on the internet are using WordPress for some reasons, that are, it is more customizable, suits the requirement of everyone, has better SEO opportunity and you can use it for more than just a blogging platform. Though, I also like Blogger and I am not against anyone using Blogger, I myself use Blogger for some of the blog. But I find WordPress better.
Which blogging platform do you like? WordPress, Blogger or something else? Let us know in the comments below.
