Tumblr is an insanely popular blogging platform that a lot of young people are using to share content, and part of what makes Tumblr so unique is its community and the ability to follow other users' blogs.
When you follow other blogs, their content is displayed in a visual feed on your dashboard. Anyone with a Tumblr account can like, reblog or reply to (if activated) a post from somebody else's blog.
Now, this is all great, but how do you even start gathering followers in the first place? Some users are able to attract thousands and thousands who constantly reblog their content, leading to even more reach and therefore even more new followers.

Growing a following on Tumblr isn't rocket science, but it does take some consistent work and dedication. Here's what you can do.
- Follow other blogs related to the theme of your own blog or personal interests
One of the simplest ways to potentially gain a few new followers is to find like-minded users who are posting content similar to what you post. So, for example, if you have a blog geared toward sharing recipes, you should look for other food bloggers and follow them.
Chances are at least a few of them will see in their Activity page that you followed them, check out your blog, and maybe follow you if they like your content.
- Like posts, reblog posts and interact as much as possible with other bloggers
There's no better technique to gaining followers than by just spending loads of time interacting. The more posts you like and reblog, the more you'll get noticed -- because those interactions show up on every user's Activity page.
You don't necessarily have to follow absolutely everyone to gain a few followers. You can simply use the search bar to look for posts related to specific words, phrases or tags, and then reblog or like the ones that appeal to you. No following necessary.
- Post great content that offers value to your followers
Tumblr users make their decision to follow you by visiting your blog and seeing if your content is interesting enough to have show up in their own dashboard. If your content isn't so good, you'll probably have a hard time attracting followers.
Try posting a combination of your own content and reblogged content, made up of highly visual stuff that's instantly eye-catching and offers some kind of value to your followers. Photosets, GIFs and videos do very well on Tumblr.
- Post often and take advantage of the post queue
The more active you are, the more followers you'll get. Tumblr is a very fast moving content platform, so if you go inactive even for as little as a few days or so, you may lose some of your followers.
Try to post at least once a day. The great thing about Tumblr is that you can plan your posts ahead of time, and then queue them up so they automatically publish in a set timeframe throughout the day or night, which you can customize from within your user settings.
- Always add tags to your posts
Here's another very quick and easy way to get more exposure to your blog. Whenever you post something new, add as many relevant keyword tags to it as you can come up with.
People are always searching through the tags, and you should too -- especially if you want to be on the lookout for new blogs to follow and attract to your own blog.
- Get featured by other Tumblr bloggers with large followings
You can get a lot of new followers very quickly if another big blog decides to feature you. Their followers can essentially become your new followers.
As an example, there are some Fitblr (fitness Tumblr) blogs that post nothing but fitness progress photos from people who submit them. If you find a blog that regularly features content in your topic of interest, consider reaching out to them or submitting your content if they have a Submit page.
- Be patient and consistent
As with any social networking growth strategy, you're not going to gain a million followers over night. The trick is to keep interacting, day after day, week after week, and month after month.
Pay attention to what your followers like, and what types of content get the most response and interaction. If you focus on the things that are working for you, you'll become more effective at growing a solid and genuine group of active followers over time.
Would love to here from you...
