So, majority beginners start using WordPress, but they don’t have any experience. So, they face many different kinds of problems while using WordPress. One of those problems is “How to Add Categories and Subcategories to WordPress“. Well, Some might feel it is the simplest, there is no need to write article on this topic.
But, think, we are here to solve problems, no matter big or small. I know this is a very small problem which can be solved without reading any post or tutorial. But still, I decided to write on this topic. So, without wasting too much time, I move on to the main point.
Step by Step Guide to Add Categories and Subcategories to WordPress
There are many ways to Add a category to WordPress posts. So, I will guide you through on each of them one by one.
Method #1
While Writing a Post, you will find an option in the sidebar below “Publish” Section Like has given in the screenshot below.
Here, you will find an option “Add New Category”. Just click on it and enter the name of your category .
Once you have entered the name, Select “Parent Category”, If you want to add a new main category, but if you want to add a subcategory, then select any parent one from the drop down menu. After you are done with it, click on the button saying “Add New Category” and you are done.
So, this is the simplest way to add categories and subcategories, but this way you will not have the option to choose slug. It means Permalink of your category page will be selected automatically. So, in case, you want to select Slug manually, then use the second method toadd categories and subcategories to WordPress.
Method #2
In the WordPress Dashboard, you will Find a Categories Menu as given in the screenshot below.
Click on it and wait for the page to open. Once it is opened, you will find a form where you can add “NAME”, “SLUG”, “PARENT”, “DESCRIPTION” and then click on “Add new category”.
This way you can select Slug manually. But I personally use the 1st method a lot, because majority times I don’t need to select slug manually. But in case you want to use the first method and still want to add Slug Manually, then you add Category using 1st Method and then, Edit it from the Categories Menu as shown in the below given screenshot.
So, this is it. I hope this guide can help you. Now, I move on and tell you about some benefits of using proper categories and subcategories on your WordPress website.
