Tuning Volks

Hey, if two of its children are around, why should big mamma be left behind. Yes, you guessed it, mothership Volkswagen has finally, finally, er, finalised its plans. After reports that they were setting up shop in various corners of the country and after checking out 17 locations, they have zeroed in on Chakan, near Pune. With an investment of around 410 million euros (Rs 2,400 crore approx), the new Volkswagen plant will be spread across 230 hectares and it will have a press shop, body shop, paint shop and assembly lines. It is expected to produce up to 110,000 vehicles a year by 2009. VW has confirmed that they will be developing a car specifically tailored for our country (India) soon, but in the meanwhile, they will use the Skoda facility at Aurangabad (just like Audi) to produce the Passat in the country. The Touareg and the Phaeton will be brought in as CBU units.
