App updates you should know about: WhatsApp, VSCO Cam, Skype and more!

Amidst some big announcements, the past week also saw app updates come to major mobile platforms. Here’s a quick recap of some app updates that you shouldn’t miss. 


WhatsApp for iOS
Apart from inking a deal with Tata Docomo, WhatsApp hit headlines for bringing out the highly anticipated iOS update. It has bumped up WhatsApp to version 2.11.5 and the user interface has been revamped to gel in with iOS design scheme. Apart from the user interface, it adds some other changes such as new broadcast list and location sharing feature. WhatsApp for iOS can be downloaded from the Apple App Store.

VSCO Cam for Android
The popular iOS photography app–VSCO Cam–now comes to Android users. It features a simple-to-use interface, powerful filters and photo editing tools. As majority of Android devices do not support spot metering, VSCO has reportedly disabled the two-finger split focus and metering tool in the camera section of the app. The VSCO Cam can be downloaded on most Android 4.0+ devices from the Google Play Store

Skype for iOS
This week, Microsoft updated the Skype app for iOS users. The app update brings a redesigned sign-in screen to make it easier to sign in with a Skype ID and also reduces the startup time. The update also adds a new permissions pop-up for iOS 7 to use the microphone for calls and audio or video messages, along with several other fixes and performance improvements. iOS users can download Skype from the Apple App Store

Google Voice Search for Android and iOS
Google Voice Search for Android and iOS has been updated to support new languages. The world’s most popular search engine now adds French, German and Japanese voice support. It is highly speculated that support for other languages is on its way. Android and iOS users can download the new version directly from Google Play Store and Apple App Store respectively.




Foursquare for iOS 7 
Foursquare has now released a new version of its iOS app to gel with the revamped iOS 7 look. Along with a facelift, the app also gets new location-based features. It adds smart recommendations via push notifications. The check-in feeds are split into two–Worldwide and Nearby–and take up the entire phone screen. The side-bar now looks radically different, showing display picture, name and profile prominently. Users can download Foursqure for their iOS devices from the Apple App Store

Bing Maps for Windows 8.1
Microsoft previews new Bing Maps app for Windows 8.1. The Bing Maps app will support the various Snap Views in Windows 8.1, along with Live Tile support and notifications feature. It includes a new "bubble view" to preview StreetSide imagery alongside maps with road names. The maps will rotate when you move around the interface. Some other new additions include traffic notification feature, prominent search box, real-time traffic notifications on the Live Tile or via notification and a Local Scout feature. The Bing Maps preview for Windows 8.1 can be downloaded from the Windows Store.
